Why you should avoid training that promises fun and games
When paintballing misses the target

RALLYING the staff with paintball battles, clay pigeon shooting and other teambuilding days is popular with companies.
For instance, blue-chip retailer Marks & Spencer hit the headlines this month when it hired an American speaker to fire up its 56,000 employees and revive flagging sales.
But some experts say that trying to gee up staff can be a waste of time and money if the effort comes too late in the day. Managers can hire all the trendy motivation gurus they like, but performance falters if they cannot offer job satisfaction.
Doug Crawford of human resources business Cerus Consulting says: ‘Hiring motivational speakers and organising large-scale group exercises are short-term measures - they are not going to sustain people’s motivation.’
